Welcome to the Press Room of the 55th Annual Golden Apple Awards

The Winners of the 55th Annual Golden Awards

We are speaking with Tori Spelling from television's "Beverly Hills, 90210."

What advice do you have for someone breaking into the business?

The best piece of advice would probably be persistence.

What would be your Christmas wish for the world?

Happy holidays and a great new year. And I want to say hello to all of my fans. I have a movie for NBC coming up called "Deadly Pursuit," on January 8.

We are now live with actor Robert Stack.

"Unsolved Mysteries" has been on the air for 8 years -- 175 shows. We have gotten 40% of the people whose pictures have been shown.

We got a very nice commendation from the director of the FBI.

Sid Caesar with Robert Stack

Sid Caesar is speaking to us:

The first TV transmission was in 1945 -- Paramount Studios. Similar to this Internet transmission in being new. I had to wear purple lipstick and the lights were so hot.

How about Show of Shows?

That was on on Saturday night. There were 45 Show of Shows.

I think the new technology is wonderful.

Any favorite shows?

My favorite was "All in the Family."

Jeanne Wolf of "TV Guide":

This is the perfect occasion to mate the tradition of Hollywood with new age technology. Happy holidays to all the entertainment buffs.

We're interviewing actress Margaret O'Brien.

(Margaret O'Brien was on the MGM lot with George Sidney. In the film "Thousands Cheer.")

Ms. O'Brien: George Sidney is a wonderful director. I have very fond memories of working with him and we have been friends all these years.

I just finished a film called "Sunset After Dark" with Anita Page which should be out shortly (Wildcat Studios). Mark Gordon is the director who just finished a film called "Point Dune." I'm here with Randal Malone, who stars in "Point Dune."

Joe Eszterhas

We're here with writer Joe Eszterhas.

What are your current pictures?:

"Jade" and "Showgirls."

How do you see the future for writers?

I'm sort of a dinosaur, and still use a typewriter.

You're very successful. Are you going to change with the technology?

Lucky for me my wife is a technological wizard.

Do you feel that writers need the assistance of software to improve their creative writing abilities?

The most important thing a writer needs is imagination and experience. Technology will work out behind you. Writing is always about the heart, the brain and the gut. However some have accused me of writing from the crotch but its really from the heart, the brain and the gut.

And now actress Jane Withers.

Hollywood Network: How did you get your start?

Jane Withers: I started in radio.

What are you doing now?

I am the Gargoyle (LaVerne) in the "Hunchback of Notre Dame" coming out from Disney next spring.

Tell us about your collection of Teddy bears and dolls.

Jane Withers with Red Buttons

[Red Buttons just joined us.]

Ms. Withers: My dolls and Teddy bears are not just on the shelves. It's a great historical collection. I've used the dolls to help teach children. I want to do films -- I've been working on this for about 40 years. I have over 14,000 dolls and 2,500 Teddy bears.

Are you missing a doll you'd like to have?

There are so many.

Do you have a Christmas wish?

Let's have a better understanding among all people. What can I do as one individual to make that happen?

George Sidney with Mr. Blackwell

With George Sidney:

I am a director, producer and photographer. I'm up for the Louella Parsons Award today. The award would put me in distinguished company.

Louella Parsons was as much involved in building this industry as the moguls and these women of the Press Club carry on this tradition.

Tell us about some of your projects

Each one is an affair all its own.

Do you have a favorite?

No.

I continue taking photographs. I have one million negatives. There's an exhibition at Boston University. You can say anything you want about my movies but don't criticize my photographs.

Do you have any advice for people trying to get into the industry?

I would recommend marrying Ted Turner's daughter.

Now we are live with Lynn Redgrave.

Do you have advice for people breaking in?

I don't know how anybody breaks into this town. When I started, when I was a "young thing," everybody in the drama school would at least get a first job. Now kids are coming out of drama departments with absolutely no guarantee. I don't know what we're going to do about it.

Holiday greetings to the world?

I hope that peace will hold.

We are now live with actress Janice Pennington, hostess of the "Price Is Right."

Do you have a Christmas wish for the world?

Yes--Peace, love, and harmony for everyone.

We are here with Jessie-Ann Friend.

What projects are you working on?

"Frankie Starlight" is a project I have coming up. I play Matt Dillon's daughter.

Have a merry, merry Christmas

We are live with Mr. Blackwell.

What is the name of your new book?

The name of the new book is "From Rags to Bitches" (General Publishing). It's in the bookstores right now. Into the third printing. Incredible.

What's going on with fashion?

We're seeing sanity. We're seeing women with more self-esteem, we're seeing women have enough nerve to tell the designers "to go to hell -- don't make a fool out of me anymore."

Why do you come to this event.?

I was one of the first men ever to join this. I think someone -- a man in the industry had to say he should be a part of this. And they give the wonderful Sour Apple Award.

Here we are with Phyllis Lycett, the President of the Hollywood Women's Press Club.

How many of these award presentations have you attended?

I first came to the one with Bette Davis. She was the first to win the Golden Apple Award. The purpose of the award is to recognize the celebrity who personifies the best of Hollywood.

We are live now with Liona Boyd, the world's foremost female classical guitarist.

You just came back from England?

I was invited by Prince Philip -- for the 5th time for a fundraiser for the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Just 120 people. A very exclusive dinner and I played for half an hour.

Last night I played with the New West Symphony here in Los Angeles -- in the new Thousand Oaks Performing Arts Center. The program included works of Vivaldi and Albinoni.

I have a Christmas album in the stores called "A Guitar for Christmas."

Any Christmas wishes for the world?

Of course I hope that in the New Year peace will come to Bosnia and to the Middle East and everywhere that there are conflicts in the world. Music is an international language that speaks to our hearts and spirits.

We are now here with Buddy Rogers. What advice do you have for young people.?

Be happy and a Merry Merry Christmas to everybody.
