Sandra Bullock and Denzel Washington received the Hollywood Women's Press Club's Actress and Actor of the Year Awards and Courtney Cox and Antonio Banderas were declared Discoveries of the Year at the 55th Annual Golden Apple Awards luncheon at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Sunday, December 10.
Presenters included Annette Bening, Jonathan Silverman, Tori Spelling, Patrick Swayze and Lynn Redgrave. The Best Actor and Actress Awards were voted by the membership of the Club to the actor and actress who had the greatest news impact in promoting the glamor of Hollywood in 1995. Cox and Banderas were tapped the favorites of press and public during the past year.
The year's Sour Apple was presented to Joe Eszterhas, one of the few "Sour" winners who has appeared to accept his apple. This award is presented to a Hollywood personality who, according to the Club's membership, "believes his own publicity."
Finally, the Club's most important kudo, the Louella Parsons Award, was presented to director-producer George Sidney by Robert Stack. The award, named after the Club's founder, is a seminal honor given "to members of the entertainment industry in Hollywood who have consistently, over the years, demonstrated genuine professionalism as an artist and been an affirmative Hollywood image-builder as a human being."
