Fritz Stammberger
According to Fritz, he was going to Pakistan to do some scouting and preparing for his next attempt at climbing Tirich Mir (25,230 feet), the highest peak in the Hindu Kush mountain range.
After I realized that Fritz was missing I set out to find him. Three separate major searches took place: one by his former partner, one by a private citizen, Jim MacGeyver (code name), and one by a famous international detective agency - Intertel. I also contacted the proper authorities at the USA State Department, FBI, Pakistani police, and the German and Afghanistani embassies. Aside from my efforts through the years, Fritz's father also pursued all channels available to him, including the German government. 
Eight years after his disappearance I made the difficult decision to declare Fritz legally dead and on April 20, 1984, I married my present husband, Carlos de Abreu. My obsession and fantasy of keeping my "phantom love, Fritz" alive sabotaged my real happiness. I placed my new marriage in jeopardy.
In July 1992, when Russian President Yeltsin stated that there might be American POWs held against their will in the former Soviet Union, Carlos and I gave our marriage one last chance. We embarked on a final search. In November 1992, almost two decades after Fritz Stammberger's disappearance, I was able to uncover the hidden truth...or was I?
