A general note to everyone:

If you have read through all these letters, you will see that I answer the same questions over and over...for the most part...and what I say is read "How to Sell Yourself as an Actor."

I wrote the book to answer these questions. There is no point in my taking time to do it all again on this page.

If you want a career in the business and don't know how to go about it, regardless of your age, if you read this book, it will answer a lot of your questions.

After you have read the book, you will not only be more
informed, you will be able to ask more specific questions that might not have been covered.

I don't reply to private e-mail addresses because I just don't have time.

Do take time to read all the other letters and answers, you will find them educational.

Good luck everyone.

K Callan

Ref 2421. dear miss callan just writing to say thanks for the advice,
since I wrote I have now got a new agent and I am working on a book called Rachael's Poems of Emotions,
One of my friends said to me the other day that's how I will become famous because they are so heart warming poems.
Also I've been told I might have to go back in to hospital for another operation on my foot and possabily my hip to so at the moment I am very worried about that .
reflecting on what you said I don't know wether to keep fighting for this dream becuase I know it takes a while but with me its got a less chance of happening .
All I have ever wanted out of life is to walk normaly but I now no that isn't going to happen so therefore all I want to do is make my parents and people in general proud of me and am willing to do all it takes, But whatever happens it I achieve it I achieve if don't I don't
college is proving very tiring but I know that if I want to study drama I have to get threw this 1 year course
thanks again k

Ref 2423. My name is Linzi and I want to do some extra work. Ive taken classes and I had a contract with an agency but I did not renwew after the year because I wanted more time to finish school. I will be 18 in January but my parents are supportive. I was hoping you could help me figure out how to get started again in just getting some renewed experience in the industry so when I graduate highschool I can get into it full time. Please e-mail me at RoxysAngel@aol.com. Thanks!

Ref 2424. Im a 21 year old hispanic. my question why is it harder for a hispanic actor to get a job as far movie, televisionn, commercials etc. you see my point. Also if you can how can I get accesed to the "the daily variety" and "hollywood reporter" if I live in Houston, Texas, I know this carry information such as acting jobs and extras. Thank you for your time and great website you have.

Ref 2425. Dear Mrs K Callan,

I am so glad and thankfull that you replyed to my message. I just want to tell you that I am serious about my dream and that I am already taking an acting course here in Egypt that will last for at least 8 months. You are absolutely right, no one can just wish to be an actor. Acting could be extremely difficult and fun at the same time. I also thought about going to England or the USA one or two years later to study Theatre but getting financial assistance is a difficulty because Universities there are too expensive for me, getting a visa is another difficulty as I mentioned before. That's why I told you that if I want to go to the US I could just start looking for an agent.
But I guess I will have to make it first in my home country to be able to make anywhere.

Thank you very much

Ref 2427. Hi. My name is "slim" and i am 20 years of age. As you hear time and time again, i am an aspiring actor. I did the whole high scool acting thing. I recently finished up at junior college. But instead of transfering to a University i was planning on going to a performing arts school or an acting school for film. Currently I do alot of modeling. To cut to the chase, i have a real good look for "the industry" and i get offered jobs left and right. Most of the time for commercials and stuff, but i figure that would blossom into more eventually. My question to you is, if i am getting job offers now, should i even take the time to go to an acting school or should i just get myself an agent and a manager and get the ball rolling now. Also if i do go to school is it hard to get jobs while in school or do CD'S like kids that are in school while pursuing jobs. Any reply would be appreciated. thanx.

Ref 2428. Hey this is "Slim" again. Whta schools do you suggest that are well respected by agencies, CD'S, and the industry as a whole. If I decide if I need more training I don't want to waste my time at a "joke" school, you know what i mean? Thanx again. Slim.

Ref 2429. Dear Ms. K Kallen,

Ref 2441. EVERYBODY! Get a life FIRST! The chances of becoming super rich and famous is very small so set your sites on something that will come true. Like going to medical school, law school, etc...work on something that depends on you and not weather someone liked you or not. This way when the day is over you can still go home to your nice home and drive nice cars. Depend on yourself and education. I audition in my time off from medical school and I find I get more parts becasue i DO NOT seem so desperate. I have a life and it shows I have confidence. These people are not stupid there is nothing you can tell them they haven't heard a 100 times before. So, make it a part time thing and if it takes off fine, if not you have a life, and if you are like me it will be a damn good one. I already have a Radiology job lined up that starts at $361,000 my first year into it. Most actors dont make that in 10 years. So be smart people.......

Ref 2442. Hello,
My name is Allison Rene Brake and I am interested in singing, acting, and directing. I have been singing all my life and I now just got into acting.I am now writing songs and movies. What should I do?

Ref 2443. Dear Ms. Callan,
I appreciate your answering all our questions, thanks! I have a couple of questions myself, real quick...
1.) I know I should do all the community and school productions as possible and gain stage experience *I'm 15*, but it seems like Hollywood is more interested in beauty than those with the best acting abilities. I mean, I'm not ugly, but would it be worth it to try for that kind of thing when I am obviously not another Reese Witherspoon, etc.?

2.) I'm flying down to the LA area this Christmas, from rural Wash. state. I think it would be a really fun experience to work as an extra. Are you informed of any filming they might be doing?

3.) I am a Christian, and would not sacrifice any standards to do films, would that make me any less appealing to CDs? As I mentioned before, though, I probably wouldn't be getting any love interest roles, anyway, but I mean other than that? Sorry about bothering you! :)

Ref 2444. Hello

I live in Toronto, am 28 and feel that I really should become an actor. My only dilemma is that I'm no pretty boy. (Shakespeare siad "be true to thy self") so I have to say that I'm farly squirmy and ugly, but I think of suck great actors like Dany Devito and Klaus Kinski who are down right weird and i wonder how they marketed them selves at the begining. I need to find ways to market my unsualness because everybody seems to snicker and turn away in disbelief when I say i want to be an actor, even at auditions.

I wont to contribute someting unique through my acting. I don't expect to because a famous star but i would like to be a good screen actor.

Ref 2445. What is a good university I can go to for acting?

Ref 2446. in reference to Ref 2110:
Hi there, In answer to your question on this board...you can get all the information you need re:acting in Canada from Reel West digest. It lists all agents, production companies and services that have to do with the Canadian film market.
I am also from Edmonton and am now in LA.
There are some agents and theater happenings in Edmonton but really Calgary, Vancover or Toronto are better place to get the wheels truning. Hope that helped...just study wherever you are.

Ref 2447. James,
Just be yourself, really, that's all you can be. Accept who you are be proud, know YOU ARE ENOUGH and go for it. Don't try DO. Just do, be and then you will have. Don't get caught up in the typical "actor" drama of what you look like. I am a girl, you'd think I'd care.... Just STUDY your craft be great by doing. ACTING is doing....Your talent will shine. That's just how all the names you mentioned made it. After all look at Kathy Bates! She's an Academy award winner!!! This is coming from a girl who was Miss California because I had something to prove to myself, ever since I could care less about what my appearances. That is hogwash that's only there to sidetrack you from your art. If you're an actor ACT!!! Period!
Love and Light

Ref 2448. Ref 2445
YALE, NYC or Columbia...good luck, but ulimately it only matters that you study your craft somewhere....it takes 20 years to really become great anyway. So 4 years at a university and you're still a neophite. Just get onstage anywhere regardless if you get into a "good university" or not Try the Meisner Center in North Hollywood if you really want to "get real" and can handle it.
Peace

Ref 2449. I currently live in Dallas Tx and I am persuing my acting career but I was wondering if it would be more beneficial to have a few agents in Dallas as well as maybe one or two to start off with in LA as well. I was also wondering where I would find additional information on casting calls in my area.
Thanks, Vernelle

Ref 2454. Thanks for all your generous advice.
I am a New York actor with a post-grad from an English drama school who is considering moving to LA. I'm going there next week to interview with a top agent that called me after my mass mailing. I will be there for a week. How else, other than this one interview, wuld you suggest I spend my time? Should I follow-up with other agents by phone (of course they all say no phone calls)? I don't have television experience, only film, will casting directors be interested in seeing me if I have representation for pilot season (I know you said they only see children during pilot season, not new people). Also, I am 32 but I can easily pass for 26 (my last agency was for 25 and under!). Should I lie in the interview if asked? I heard that manyagencies in LA are clearing house of their unestablished over 30's. Also, should I have a reel for this meeting? I have one film that is 16mm but the others are on dv...how much will be expected on a professional reel? And finally, I'm not SAG yet...will this matter? SHould I just call the agency and ask them about the SAG question, reel, etc. and what will be expected of me in the meeting before I fly out there?

Thanks so much

My name is Alex and I live in Jacksonville Flordia and Im 12 years old going on 13. Ive never been to acting school and ive only been in one play which was Harry Potter. Ref 2499. Hi Mrs. Kallan, I've got to say your books have really aided me a lot and I feel that it has helped me come really far, from getting my first agent, to finding work for myself. My name is Andrew, I'm from NYC, I'm 19 (in other words I'm 16-24, lol), and I'm still searching for my big break (but any kind of break will do). My question deals with pilots. I recently shot a great pilot, with a good plot and reasonably good actors. It was edited and even premiered on a big screen at Ramapo college in NJ. It got a great reaction and I especially recieved GREAT feedback on my performance. The problem is that the project wasn't backed by any production company like many pilots commonly are (according to my acting teacher) and therefore didn't have much industry visibility. And many of the industry people that we invited to the premiere didn't come. I (and many other people) feel that it is a great story and probably could get picked up if the right people see it. I was wondering if you could give me some ideas about marketing this sitcom or at least how do I get it in front of people that can do something about it (producers, network people, etc.).I'm not the producer but he has given me a lot of liberty in helping with the business side of things. After all, I do have a vested interest in it.

Also in How to Sell Yourself as an Actor, you say that booking a sitcom pilot can be very good for an actor's year regardless of if it gets picked up or not. I would like to know how could I make this pilot advantageous if it doesn't get picked up? I'd really appreciate your input. Thanks in advance.

Ref 2500. Wow I know the chances of you reading this is actually slim to none. But, I just wanted to let everyone know out there that they will see me soon because I am going to become a great actress. Even though some people have told me that I don't have the looks, I will prove to them that I can do it. To everyone out there- It doesn't take good looks to become a good actor/actress, It takes time, hard work, and effort. If you have enough hope, ambition, and love in you..than you can become an actor ..very easily. Well, I guess I will see you in show buisness ; )!

Ref 2501. I know that i really don't have a chance of becoming an actress there must be over 10,000 people who would love to be in the acting business. Though my acting skills aren't very high. I was a duck and a munchkin in both my school plays but i suppose that doesn't mean that i'm not good. I know that i can accomplish being an actress if i really set my mind to it. But i know that my chances of becoming a actress are 1 to a million so i'm not expecting anything big or yet anything at all. Though just for one day to say that's me, me on TV. would be my dream come true. Thank you for taking your time at reading my message i really appreciate it!

Ref 2503. Hello K Callan!

Wow...I have to admit how impressed I am to see how dedicated you are to answering all these questions from us "civillians"! Thank you for that.

My name is Annabelle and I am a twenty year old, living in Baltimore, Maryland. I've been performing (singing, dancing, acting...or just taking on characters around the house to get smiles from friends and family) since I first felt the absolute rush of garnering attention -- which was at a very young age. It wasn't until recently that I finally decided to do myself the favor of actually giving professional acting a shot. I knew I would regret throwing away that passion for I have for performing. I also know that the obstacles in front of me seem particularly intimidating because, in my circle of aquaintances, I'm the person who seems to know the most about acting and the process of getting work (and believe me...that isn't saying a lot about what I know!) I picked up your book for actors at the bookstore yesterday and finished reading it this morning; thus far it is the most informative resource for beginning actors that I have come across!

I did have one question and it has to do with comp cards. Do you know if it is a good idea to send a comp card in along with one's headshot and resume?

Thank you for your time and have a wonderful year in 2003!

Sincerely,
Annabelle

Ref 2517. I am an theatrical actress living in SLC, Utah. I would like to break into the booming film industry here. I have met w/an local agent and was told that I would have to take a class they offer ($450) before they would sign me. The agency is regestered w/SAG. Is this a scam?

Ref 2518. Dear K,

Well, its been a while since I posted here, and I sincerely doubt that you'll remember me (there are SO many posts here now, and I think my last one appeared in Drawer 31!) but I just wanted to let you know that I'm still ploughing forward on that Australian/UK film and its actually moving along on the right track - will wonders never cease?! We have a distribution rep, and co-producer, and three more high profile cast. And "patience" is still my buzz-word. (I have since worked out that's one of my major lessons this lifetime!)

My acting career has kick-started again, with a recent role in a BBC mini-series which aired in the UK in December 2002. So 2003 is shaping up to be a great year and I just wanted to thank you again for your support and advice. I did buy "How to Sell Yourself as an Actor", and found it to be a brilliant resource (despite being in Australia - the principals are the same wherever you are), but then I lent my copy to someone and it never came back! So I'm going to have to buy another one ... but the investment is definitely worth it as it is a book that you can go back to again and again. I highly recommend it to anyone working or looking to work in this highly competitive and sometimes bewildering industry.

I hope all is going well with you and thank you for continuing to give back to the industry via services such as this. I was lucky enough to have a highly experienced mentor in the late British actor, Sir Nigel Hawthorne for 4 years prior to his passing in 2001, but knowing that others, such as yourself are also actively supporting the next generation coming up is both comforting and inspirational. It is a wonderful example for the rest of us to follow.

Best regards,

DO THIS NO MATTER WHAT. HOW DO I GET STARTED IF I LIVE IN A VERY SMALL TOWN AND THERE ARE NO SCHOOLS FOR ACTING AROUND HERE? PLEASE HELP.
Theresa

Ref 2143
Dear Theresa:
You didn’t say where you live so it’s hard for me to give you specific advice. Even if there are not schools for acting, most schools and towns have plays. You should try out for anything you can and take any job working backstage anyplace that you can. Start reading biographies of actors you respect and see how they went about preparing for life as an actor.
Good luck.

Ref 2145. Hi Ms. Callan: In 18 months I have been in 3 feature films, some as major characters but these are micro-budget indies out of Nashville. I have 2 activelky running regional commercials with myself as the lead or lead male, have done 7 styudent short film projects for Watkins Film Institute in Nashville,. My question is - is any of this likely to impress an LA agent - I hear they are kind of callous and very picky yet I need one to get into larger budgeted productions out west. Any ideas? Thank You. Perry Poston perry@nwir.com

Ref 2145
Dear Perry:
Either go to your library and ask them to get a copy of “How to Sell Yourself as an Actor,” or get one from a bookstore or the website: www.swedenpress.com. it will give you some ideas. Basically any agent will be interested in seeing how you are on film. No one will care how big the film was if you are young, handsome and a great actor. Sometimes just being a great actor does the trick - - though young and handsome are more saleable traits.
Good luck.

Ref 2146. Hi again, Ms. Callan: I am constantly told I am a dead-lookalike for Charles Durning - a fine actor whose work I respect for many years. Is it or would it be wrong to try to capitalize on that lookalike appearance to further my acting career and if its not, how would you suggest I exploit that? Thank You. Perry Poston perry@nwir.com

Perry:
We already have Charles Durning and he is not working every day. I would distance myself from that look as much as I could. So you are the guy in 2145? Well, if you are in the Durning category it’s going to be much harder. You may continue to get more work in Nashville than you would in LA.

Ref 2156. Hi, I know this might not be an appropriate question, but I need help. I 'm 16 and my agent wants me to lose weight. He prefers me around 90-93 pounds I am nowhere near that at 111. I used to weigh that much, but the only way that I can get there is to starve myself and workout like crazy. Last time I did that I developed an eating disorder which I am still trying to overcome. My hair fell out, I could poke my fingers through my ribs, I lost my period, I was pale as a ghost. In short, my body was starting to shut down. Even now I am constantly on a diet and still having body image problems. I want to work but I dont want to slowly kill myself again. What can I do. Next year I move to L.A here there is serious competion to get work and be the most beautiful and the thinnest. I just need some advice. Thankyou Nicole Valentina

Ref 2156
Dear Nicole:
You did not say where you live so I have no idea what the marketplace is where you are. Nothing (NOTHING) is worth dying for and what you are describing leads there quickly. There are many talented, thin and beautiful young girls in Hollywood who are NOT working. If you are going to be unemployed (and most of us are most of the time) at least be healthy?
Good luck and don’t let you agent push you into making what you know are bad decisions for your life.

Ref 2158. hola! i've been acting for a while but just for fun, like at home on tape or just simple plays for my mom. I know that is what I want to do but i've never takin acting classes or anything and i'm already 18 years old. There's so many questions that I want to ask but i'll hold those in for later. Ok, you get a script you read look at it immediatly you
start visualizing how to act it out right! when your acting a character out you pretend that your that character in real life so it can be more realistic right! Please don't mind me saying right, it's just that I just want direction on tips not ok do this and that. When an actor's thinking out how he's going to do the line or the whole scene is he supposto visualize his facial expressions or just make it seem real and the faces will come out?

Dear 2158
You need not only to be able to find the Upper Case key on your computer but to read some books about acting. Try Uta Hagen’s book “Respect for Acting” and make your way from there.
Good luck.

I don’t know the answer but always strongly discourage anyone from joining SAG via waivers and/or before he/she has some great credits under his/her belt. There are already 100,000 members of SAG, 85% are out of work most of the time. With a SAG card you are no longer eligible for any non-SAG work where you can not only pick up some money and film but much needed experience if you are going to survive.
Good luck.

Ref 2317. My name is Crystal and I am 13, I live in Charlotte,NC and like so many others my dream is to be a actress and when I get 18 i'm moving to LA, but for now in Charlottle I feel like I am missing opportunities and I was waundering if it would do any good to send my headshot/resume to casting directors in NY and LA? Would they even consider somebody from so far away? I want so desperatly to get in the action and find out if I really have what it takes to be a actress, none of my family supports me in my decision. Also they won't support me finacly because I have fallen for alot of scams in the past. So without any money and being a thousand miles away from casting directors minds, what can I do to get myself out on the market. I can't go to acting classes or get professional headshots done and I know its futile that you get experiance and start as early as possilbe but I don't know how to do that. I have got a job lined when I turn 14 but I can only work a few a hours on the weekend( the law). I just don't know what to do. Also your son is the absolute finest man in this universe, I have pics of him all over my walls. Thanks for your time

Ref 2318. Dear K,
Blessings. I am currently researching the phenomenon of stardom, and how actors resist identifying with their star persona. I was delighted to find this facility to have an opportunity to propose a couple of questions. As you are a successful actress, Has there been occasions when you have found yourself responding as a 'star' rather than as 'yourself'? From the amount of e-mail you recieve, it proves the obsession almost , people have with stars. Can I ask how you manage this? Has it changed you, do you think? I would be grateful if you could find the time to respond. Thank you, from a British student, Rebecca.

Ref 2318
Dear Rebecca:
Although I have had times in my career of increased visibility, I have never been a ‘star’ in the Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts, etc. sense of the word and can’t really answer your question from personal experience. From my informed observation point, however, I’ll say that I think it’s extremely difficult to keeps one’s perspective and persona intact with all the energy directed toward you if you are a ‘star.’

Most people in that situation try to surround themselves with people who knew them before they were ‘stars’ which helps them keep perspective.

I know many stars who have not been affected in the least.

Ref 2323. Hi,
my name is Eva I live in PA and I want to be a Model first so I can get my name out there, but what I really want to do is act. I love Halle berry she is my role model she is so cute.I am black does that have anthing to do with being a model? My parents are white they think it would be cool for me to do some modeling but there is one BIG prob.I have these dark spots on my face can makeup take care of that? people say I am so pretty but that is because I wear makeup. do the modeling people need black people right now?

Ref 2323
Dear Eva:
Being a model has nothing to do with skin color. It has to do with height (you need to be tall), weight (you need to be thin) and beauty (you need to be gorgeous). If you can pull that off with some makeup, you might be able to do it if you are disciplined and work at it. If your parents are supportive, perhaps they will help. You can send candid snapshots to the New York agencies (Ford is one of the biggest) and see what they say. Most have a ‘drop in’ day once a week for models to show their pictures and for them to take a look.

If you are going to be in New York, I would research that.
Good luck.

Ref 2528. Hi, I am a 24 year-old actress in Los Angeles. Right now, I am not signed with my agent, but he is seeing what the response will be towards my headshots and demo. Because I am not signed to this agent, can I talk to others, about doing the same? He isn't sending me out too much, and I have to bug him to get me auditions. However, if I am working with a couple of agents (not singed), I could get more auditions...is this unacceptable? What can I do to get more auditions as a non-union, non-SAG actress?? Your advice would be greatly appreciated!

Ref 2535. Hello!

I recently received an application for a pageant in the mail and am contemplating whether or not I should submit the application for my two eight month old twin girls. There is no experience or person I can turn to for advice. No one around me has ever participated in a pagent. Where can I get information on the reputableness of this pagent? What are some of the things to look out for? What do I need to know going into this that is normally not mentioned? Are there hidden expenses I need to know about? It appears to be a pagent for beginners and first timers. Is this a good way to start out? My email address is araschdorf@nyc.rr.com. Thank you for your help!!!!!

You know that I'm studying to become an actor, but what I would like to know is, when your performing in front of a camera, what be going through your head at those moments? Would you tell me? please reply--- lylemajor@hotmail.com

Ref 2542. Ms. Callan, I read your book, and it was quite helpful. I am an actress currently in LA and I did a mass mailing(targeting representation) over the holidays and have been receiving great responses. My question is, I rec'd a call from a manager who wants to meet with me. He said he has a celeb client list, but they are older clients and his trying to get some younger talents he can develop. When I looked him up on "whorepresents.com" his name did not come up, which it normally does when they have celeb clients, also he mentioned a $40 a month "development fee" that he charges new clients for any expenses he has to put out. This raised a red flag for me. He said on the months I make money it would be added to his 15% commission. What do you think? I am meeting with him tomorrow and ofcourse I'm not planning to sign anything, I just want to see what he has to say. Also he has us meeting at a resteraunt cause he says his office is in Tahunga. It all seems shady to me. Any thoughts?
Thanks for your time

Ref 2549. Hello, I am sending this message from Toronto. I was recently thinking of trying out for Much Music as a VJ. I know that I have the personality for this, but I don't have an on TV experience. (It's a bonus but not required). I don't know what some of the things they require for the audition are. For example what is a reel? What can I familiarize myself with in order to put myself in the same league as the people who have on screen experience? Also, I don't have much of a biography (and I don't really know EXACTLY what it is). I have done a website, and one commercial for a school event (i was broadcast internally). If you could give me some advice, I think I might be able to have confidence in myself!!!! I know I have the confidence in me somewhere (otherwise I woudn't even be auditioning), I just need more info!!!! (there is no one for me to contact at muchmusic)

Don't get me wrong, Vancouver is beautiful, but it just doesn't give me anything near that bite of exitment I recieved each ime I stepped out of my door in LA LA land. Ref 2553. Hello....First of all, your site is helpful and informative. You are an inspiration and for that I (we) thank you. I will try to make this brief for I understand and appreciate the time and effort you put into this site.

I began preforming on stage since the age of three, singing and dancing in public at six and public speaking at ten. In radio, I worked as an announcer/DJ for three years and hosted my own cable TV shows. I have been a preformer all of my life (24 yrs) and I know nothing else. I have taken various classes and have preformed on many a set and stage.

I am from small town BC and moved to Vancouver at ninteen. Sorry to bore you with details, but my point is that I am slightly frustrated with Vancouver. I lived in Hollywood for a while and fell in love.

Being a true artist - if I am not surrounded by other artists, I feel alone. I am all alone here (it seems) in Vancouver. Perhaps I havn't made the right connections. I suspect, however, that Vancity just isn't the place for me and my ever yearning soul. I am drowning artistically and want to move back to LA.

How is the indusry hanging in down there?
Can a canadian girl with a big heart, a dream and the motivation to see it through survive in the city of Angels, or should she stick it out in Vancouver until she's got afew more credits under her belt?

I will read your book........however - my question is industry based... considering our rocky times....I say "Follow your heart"

Thanks Babe (See ya in LA!)

Ref 2555. Stephanie, Hunny, if you "want to be an actress" - "Act" Audition for local plays, or musicals, take acting classes but by all means buy Ms. Callan's book: "How to sell yourself as an actor" If you want to be famous - that is a different story. As an actor trying to " work" You are now a sales person and the only person who's sellin what you got is you.

Hey.....if the scriot calls for a "chubby girl" prove to the casting directors (or agents) that you are the only "chubby girl" for the part. Sell your self. Good luck and learn how to take rejection with out taking it to heart.

Hopefully you will have money saved up and a place to stay. I am assuming you have headshots, a good resume and a bottomless barrel of ambition. You are going to need it. Ref 2580. Dear Ms. Callan:

I am a tremendous fan of the many books you have written regarding the entertainment industry. I have found your work to be incredibly honest, and wonderfully inspirational. Incedentally, I share these same sentiments regarding your acting as well.

To be brief, I am a 28 year old NYC actor who has spent a lot of time traveling between coasts. My wife and I have made the decision that it is the right point in my career to relocate to Los Angeles. I am being aggressively pursued by a Los Angeles Agency entitled Vaughn D. Hart and Associates. Much to my chagrin, there is no listing of this agency within my entertainment "bible", The Los Angeles Agency Book. I was wondering if you have had any past experience with Vaughn Hart, or if you have come across any information regarding his agency throughout the research of your books? I understand he has been in the business for several years, and that he is well known as a "boutique" agency. If you have any other information you feel would prove valuable, I would greatly appreciate you replying to this message.

Thank you very much for you time.

Best Regards,

Douglas

Ref 2583. Dear Ms. Callan,

I'm currently reading your book "How To Sell Yourself As An Actor" and it's been very informative so far. I'm just starting out in the business so I'm sure I'll be referring back to it quite a bit w/ each step of the way. But I still have a few questions. I'm currently training in New York (born & bred in Brooklyn). It's as if being in a large entertainment market is a two-sided coin. On one side, it's great to have a lot of opportunity and on the other, it's a heck of a lot harder than trying to break into commercials or plays in a small town. So my question is what's the best place to start here? I think theater is a great foundation but it's not exactly where I see myself to be quite honest. Film is and has always been a passion of mine(I also write as well and have taken screenwriting classes). As my actor cousin said to me (pretty much similar advice you give) it's important to create your own material these days. Besides that, to start adding to my very scarce resume as well as gaining experience, would student films be the way to start for me? Should I contact film schools to keep me on file for any future student films? Do they even do that?

I'm also interested in taking a commercial workshop/class thinking it could be a good start and perhaps just a slight bit easier than going in for film right away. What are your thoughts on this? I'm wondering if just studying my craft is what I should be concentrating on now as opposed to spending money on commercial classes when I don't have technique down yet.

The last thing is is that I'm a bit older than most actors starting out. I'm a 31 yr. old female. I know I don't look my age and people who meet me are shocked to learn how old I am. I can probably play an age range of 22 (possibly younger even w/ the right makeup/clothes etc) through 28. I'm not drop dead beautiful. If I may so, I'm told I'm pretty, but mostly I think I have a very cute/pretty look. Girl next door but w/ a sexy edge. Oh, I'm also petite- 4'11 & 3/4" to be exact. It helps w/ the younger look but it's been one of the very stupid obstacles I always thought stood in my way of an acting career. In any case, I just gave up a career in PR to pursue this dream of mine that won't let go of me but doing it at 31 is quite scary and yet liberating at the same time. Any advice for an 'older' actor? You're an inspiration for doing what you did when you left OKLahoma for NYC w/ three small children. I think of your story when I'm feeling like I can't do this for one reason or another and I'm motivated once again!

Thanks for your ear. Any advice, words of wisdome or encouragement would be much appreciated!

Best regards,

Sophie

My name is Anna P.And i am in the process of becoming an actress. My question to you is"How sucessful are actors/actresses in the business"first starting off by putting your self in the "light of acting/work"?Do you have to have certain qualifications and is it really hard in either New York& Los Angeles to get work as an actress? Also, does one (me) need a connection and can you get discovered in Florida,perhaps....anywhere besides Cali or New York?!I lived in Cali but we moved to Florida.I really want to study acting and make a career out of it.I have been through the LoBlolly Theatre in Florida, and received a certificate as well as done some stage plays. And is it harder for mixed (me,i'm mixed with white and black)people...black people to become apart of "The World of Acting"?

Ref 2637. Hi, I have a question coming from a different angle. Recently I started theatre acting classes and discovered I really enjoy performing on stage and have started to become quite good at it. I'm 28 years old and would never have thought that I would ever have enjoyed it. I am an introverted personality type but am definentley not shy or antisocial as some people with this personilty type are. My question is does this make any difference (hinderance or good thing) to my acting ability, or possibly am I just a freak? Is an outgoing personality a better type for an actor? I suspect that it does not matter but has more to do with how much a person believes in themself. Please help me understand why I love performing.

Ref 2640. O.K. First off thanks for taking the time to answer these questions. After reading so many of the same one's over and over I have to give you a lot of credit for doing this. I can't say I would do the same. That being said heres my situation. I am a 29 year old male. Thankfully I look more like 23. I have little acting experience but have been told by many that I am just a natural. That's all and good and it does give me confidence but I want to study acting a lot more. I am now living in N.Y.C. If i had read your book beforehand I would have waited till I was more marketable but I'm doing o.k. here now. I have cheap rent in Queens and and getting by pretty well. I have taken classes on and off at H.B. studio but want something more intense. A conservatory. I would love to go someplace like N.Y.U. but I talked to a counselor and she told me straight that the odds of getting accepted were pretty slim since I don't have much general education. I am wavering on going to The American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Stell Adler, or Circle in The Square. Can I ask you first off which of those schools do you think is best for someone who leans more towards (and I say this only because of lack of a better term) "method" acting. Also I know that you say that if you can it's best to get a graduate degree at a good school. Do you think it's best to go to one of the schools i just mentioned or do you think it's better to get a degree at someplace that is more likely to accept me like Hunter college or another community college like that. Thanks for your responce.

Ref 2641.
Hey!!! My name's Stefie, im Puerto Rican, I know Spanish, and im 14. As a child I have always had a dream, to become a famous actress and I know it's not easy to accomplish.

My life I have had depressing and sad things a curing
constantly believe me, but im not going to be to specific, I have analyzed that it has helped me as an actress because when I want to act its easy for me to feel the emotions. I know I have the qualities to become an actress. There are many things that i have the ability to do or become, im vary artistic, many people say, oh become a painter, or become a model etc. But Im not really interested in these things.

Something that makes me believe is that before my
grandfather died he told me that I would be famous and that made me happy to
know I had someone to count on.

I am the parent of an extremely talented, blonde and beautiful 16 year old female version of Jim Carrey. She has his faces, his moves, his comedic presence. (He is her hero.) I've been watching her develop for years and it just dawned on me the other day that the girl has a genuine talent. She's been in several local plays in our extremely small town. I wanted to make perhaps a demo video or something showcasing her work but have no idea who to get it out to in the DFW area. I've been searching the net for clues. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Please email me at stormi007@msn.com.

Ref 2665. Dear Mrs. Callan,
Hello. I am a 13 year old girl living in Virginia. I really would very much like to become an actress. I set my mind to it that I was in deed going to be an actress after I have seen so many wonderful and dramatic preformances. I have not had much experience in acting yet. I am intending on being in drama class and club at my highschool next year but I am not sure if I have much chance at ever being more than just a highschool actress. It's my lifelong dream I suppose, but I very much would like it if I could get some information on how to become an actress and if there is even a possible way. Knowing that I come just from Virginia and not a very film known place.

Thank you so much for your time,
Lauren Cutie21_0521@hotmail.com

Ref 2666. Dear K,

First of all, thanks for this site. It's wonderful! My 13 year old daughter has studied acting for the past 5 years, she's very talented and very dedicated. Her dad and I have tried to discourage her (it's such a hard life!), but she's determined. She's been interviwed by agents, and offered contracts (we're in the NYC area). My question is- how do we decide which agency or manager to sign with? I read where you asked one mother who complained that her children were not getting auditions, "Did you research the agent before you signed"? Is there a website or some such vehicle in which to compare/contrast agents? Thanks so much!

Ref 2667. I know that scenes should be about 3-4 pages, but is it okay that I have two scenes that are 10 pages 15 pages? Reason being, both master scenes contain a few secondary slugs which continually shift from one to another. Because of this I feel the reader's interest will be sustained. Am I wrong and this is a standard which shouldn't be broken, or are secondary slugs actually considered different scenes, therefore it wouldn't be like one 15 page scene but rather a bunch of 3 page scenes under a master? -- Aaron

Ref 2669. Mrs. Callan,
Hello, I was wondering if 13 is too late to start thinking about acting. I have read about my favorite actresses/actors and it seems as though they had been brought up the entire time acting since they were 3 or at least a VERY young age. Seeing as how I just recently became VERY interested in acting. I would love to be a great actress but I need to know if I could. I love the idea of being a different person with each role and taking on my own view of a person. Acting is just something that is very interesting in all aspects. I have always liked the idea of being able to think I could be an actress and take on different characters. I LOVE IT! Although I don't have much experience with it I intend to be great at it. If only I knew wether I could or not coming from Virginia. Being thirteen and a number of other factors. THANK YOU so much for your time.

was rather rude and I am 13 years old. I believe that if I try hard enough I can be an actress. But I do mean I will have to try. But my message to all those young people wanting to be actors/actresses don't take that to heart. People all have there different opinions but that was rude and everyone is aloud to dream what they want to. And one person can't change that. Keep working at it guys! Starry-eyed is not correct. We are all living a dream and not a lie.
