The MERCADO IBEROAMERICANO DE LA INDUSTRIA AUDIOVISUAL or MIDIA, known in the English speaking world as the Latin American Television Market, is Spain's foremost conference on television, film, cable, video and multimedia production and distribution. The 1996 conference, on June 18-20, takes place at Madrid's impressive El Palacio Municipal de Congresos, or "Local Convention House," part of the huge city complex Campo de las Naciones, located between the city center of Madrid and Barajas airport. The event is co-sponsored by F.A.P.A.E., the Federation of Spanish Associations of Audiovisual Producers, Ineralia, and C.E.P.I., the European Coordination of Independent Producers.
The MIDIA '96 awards ceremony will be broadcast live on television in all Latin American countries. The awards are designed to encourage cultural exchanges between Spanish-speaking countries through wider circulation of television programs and films. The awards are given to programs and individuals based upon technical excellence, audience-pulling capacity, and the possibility of worldwide exploitation.
